It’s almost suitable that this comic ends with the ending of one of my worst moves for the comic. That move being the “Halloween Party” storyline which ended around summertime.
Clearly things were going to happen after this strip. I had planted dozens of seeds that were going to grow into mighty oaks of plot lines and these would continue to drop further seeds into the fertile grounds of Cliché Olé. Yet none of this happened because I stopped Cliché Olé.
I stopped for a bunch of reasons. But I will give you all the most important ones.
- It was my first comic ever and because of that will always be my most amateurish attempt at a comic. Cliché Olé got better as things went along but it would have always had that long period of awfulness at the beginning. I feel too many web cartoonists stick with their bad comics when they would be better suited to learn from their mistakes and start and all new series. Writers of every other medium do this when things aren’t working out, so why not with webcomics?
- I was getting older. I no longer spent a lot of time at the mall and things were getting to the point where I honestly could not tell you what kids liked these days. So what business did I have making fun of teenagers at the mall? It’s like a grandpa doing a comic about what’s going down at the malt shop these days. Just doesn’t work.
- I was more concerned with ending Cliché Olé as quickly as possible rather than making it as good as it could be. I wanted to work on other projects. There are tons of comics I wanted to and still want to create and while I was busy with Cliché Olé that could not happen. So I was trying to think of how to conclude the series as quickly as I could, which is never where a cartoonist should be. So I decided to simply stop and move on.
- No one read the booger anyway. Seriously. Not a big deal.
