This comic was an idea of mine back when I thought Lazy Fireman could be a more historically based comic series. I originally started this strip after I finished reading the great Gary Larson’s Complete Far side Collection. I was impressed with Larson’s ability to write extremely intelligent jokes (he did strips about micro-biology, that were funny) which did not talk down to its readers as some newspaper comics I feel do.

I think a joke is part riddle. A riddle the reader is expected to solve. If that riddle is too easy or too hard, the joke is either bland or simply not funny. Finding that sweet spot of execution is what the greatest cartoonists can do.

So I felt history had enough weird things in it to do these jokes on (eventually I steered away from history) but I still really like this joke. Also it should be noted that the caption at the bottom was written by Dan and Ethan of Space Pirates Ltd.
